Style Inspiration- Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Fashion Icon

"No one else looked like her, spoke like her, or was so orignial in the way they did things. No one we knew ever had a better sense of self." (Sen. Ted Kennedy)

I decided to do a little series on
women who inspire style. My fashion icons and inspiration. Jackie is an obvious choice, she took American fashion to a new level. Here are some of the staples of Jackie style and some great pieces you can buy to exude effortless chic.

Oversize Sunglasses. Jackie started wearing these over 40 yrs ago, and we all still wear them!
Chic.

Simple, monochromatic palettes. I
found lots of pictures of Jakie in one color from hat to shoes. It was always a simple color and a simple silhouette.

Classic.

Bateau Neckline. Elongates the neck. Also loved by Audrey Hepburn.
Simple.

Sheath Dresses. Feminine, simple and practical. The sheath dress is sexy and figure hugging while still being refined, classy and conservative.

Effortless.

Pearls. A string (or several) of pearls can instantly complete a Jackie look. You dont need to spend a lot of money on these, even Jackie had fake pearls!
Elegant.

Three quarter length sleeves. The three quarter length sleeve is classic Jackie. Three quarter length sleeves make the arms appear longer and are perfect for highlighting a great bracelet or watch. Many of Jackie's coats had three quarter length sleeves, which she would sometimes pair with white gloves. This look instantly channels 60s glamour.

Sophisticated.

Simple Accessories. Less is more.

Elegant.

“I think her style was very optimistic, when you really felt that America could accomplish anything. Optimistic in a luxury sense – in the sense that she was living the life everyone wanted to live!" (Cynthia Rowley, designer)

For you, darling...
Some of these are pricier than I normally like to go, but another thing we can learn from Jackie, is to invest in good, quality pieces.

Carolee. $150.
Target. 39.99

Modcloth. $69.99 Urban Outfitters. $39.99J. Crew. $180. Revolve. $345.

Urban Outfitters. $24

Urban Outfitters. $18.

To complete the J.K.O. look I need to invest in an Hermes scarf, and a Gucci New Jackie bag, of course. I've got to be accurate ;)

Tell me who your style inspirations are!

  1. Jackie O was flawless and really set the bar for fashion. Many of the outfits she wore will never go out of style. She defined class...
Excellent choice for the first icon in your series!

  2. Fabulous post!! You have amazing taste! I am a huge Jackie O fan myself and you picked out everything I feel in quintessentially her. Let's see, right now my style icon, especially in terms of classic, iconic style, is actually another first lady. I love Michelle Obama's style. Much like Jackie O, she is able to be conservative without looking like a drab old maid (hehe). She is chic and professional but still looks like she is enjoying herself in her clothes and she isn't stuffed into some wretched "politician's wife" ensemble that she hates.
Thanks again for sharing this! It's quite marvelous!!
    Cheers,
    Clare

  4. Jackie O was so stylish. She wore everything so gracefully.

I am a huge fan of Audrey Hepburn. I think she and Jackie were similar in their style.

  5. mine are twins (for their clean and fresh makeup), avril for her casual and independent punk/rock/girly style, gwen stefani for her classic x glam x sporty x feminine looks, and kylie for her eccentric make up and heels + sportswear crossover. since they are artists, they probably have to dress to impress, but, i feel that they are more dressing to their own taste and style. rather than saying they inspire me to dress like them, they inspire me to dress like me -- what's comfortable and suitable for the occasion. n how one dress doesnt really change who one really is inside.
